Our expert in the field, Louise Adlerton, Head of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Manufacturing at Cepheo, shares his vision for the future of Nordic manufacturing based on the dominant trends in digital business platforms.
The digital backbone is a given
He begins by painting a clear picture of ERP, CRM and production systems that are no longer isolated islands. Instead, they are connected in a central cloud-platform that makes data accessible across the entire organization and helps processes flow seamlessly from customer order to delivery, and from product development to recycling.
“When all business applications work together, data comes alive. You get a completely different level of cohesion in decision making and that will be crucial for how we run manufacturing operations and do business,” says Louise Adlerton.
AI as a constant companion
AI is no longer experimental, it is an integrated part of everyday life. Forecasts, analyses and recommendations are generated in real time, with a level of precision that was unthinkable just ten years ago.
“It is now a natural part of how operators get support to optimize production, engineers simulate complex scenarios using digital twins and leaders gain a holistic view that connects strategy and daily operations.”
Real-time demand planning
From unpredictability to precise forecasts, the development can be summed up simply: With AI powered tools integrated into cloud platforms, demand-forecasting becomes a continuous process that is constantly fed with new data.
“All variables such as weather data, market signals and customer behavior are automatically factored in. The result is minimal inventory, high efficiency and an industry that can scale production up or down at short notice,” she clarifies.
Sustainability as a core not a requirement
Regulatory demands for climate reporting were once a challenge. By 2030, they will be a natural part of the industry's DNA. Thanks to cloud platforms, companies can monitor resource consumption, energy use and carbon footprint in real time, allowing for rapid process adjustments.
“When sustainability data is integrated into the digital platform, it is not just a reporting issue, it becomes a clearly quantifiable driver of innovation and competitiveness,” continues Louise Adlerton.
From product to platform
The way we do business, and the very business models we use, have also changed significantly. More vendors offer solutions that can be customized in a smarter way to meet specific customer needs. Examples could be, for example, Product as a Service solutions, subscription models and data-driven service agreements.
“IoT sensors in machines and products send back information that is analyzed and turned into proactive service or new value-creating offerings for customers. Much of this will happen automatically,” she explains.
Democratized data
Perhaps the biggest shift is cultural. Data is no longer reserved for the IT department, it is accessible to everyone in the organization from the shop-floor operator to the product developer and marketing manager.
“The future is clearly about the gains we can achieve by democratizing data. When those with business insight get the right real-time insights they can drive development forward themselves,” emphasizes Louise Adlerton.
2030: An industrial nation in motion
Nordic manufacturing in 2030 will be fast, flexible and competitive. It will stand strong internationally – not because it was first, but because it chose to invest long term in digital platforms, skills-development and innovation.
“I see a future where smart Nordic production excels across many industries and even leads in several areas. But the prerequisite for reaching this vision is that we dare to invest today,” concludes Louise Adlerton.
